Among the Trees - Artist’s Statement
I am surrounded by woods and water and time. Time walking among the trees travels into the layers of my art.
The woods display changing colors, sounds, and smells of the wild. Water supports me either when floating or when frozen. Time is both quick and endless. We all have the same amount of it, but we all do not have enough.
The encaustic medium is unique in its combination of luminosity, fluidity, and texturing capability. It lends itself perfectly to capturing the essence of a time and place in the woods or water. The melting of the wax reminds me of the smooth water or breezy trees. Textures made to reach out and touch evoke a rough stone wall on the hillside or the mirror-like quality of water. Layer after layer, walk after walk, we all build up our story of life. These paintings are meant to embody that history so that each of us can find our own connection.
