Carol Krauss: Tidal Changes | Gallery 3 @ AVA (on the third floor) Carol Krauss uses the daily tidal changes of the oceans as a metaphor for life’s changes. The daily movement, either gentle or powerful, represents the human condition with all of its vulnerabilities. The ability of water to permeate all phases of our lives, from birth to death, from one day to one lifetime, challenges Carol to present interpretations in a visual form using wax as the painting medium. As abstracted concepts, yet still referring to form and place, she invites the viewer to look deeply into the layers to find their own unique interpretation. The inherent reflectivity of water guarantees that it will never look the same twice. Similarly, Carol’s paintings are open to changing interpretation on a daily basis, just as the tides shift our lives.

Wax inherently embodies the fluidity of water and is a natural entry into her body of work. Molten wax seeps over the surface searching for nooks and crannies to fill and waiting to be further melted by the next layer. Deep layers of wax capture the luminosity that one might see while on the water or shore. Scraping through layers of wax, she reveals evidence of past scars that the water has covered, protecting from further damage yet still apparent. Tidal Changes will always be evolving.
